Moving to VU Puts Albert in Pole Position
In between supervising staff and mingling with VIPs and business clients at this year’s Melbourne Grand Prix, Albert Lim takes time out trackside to reflect on his decision five years ago to leave Malaysia to study at Victoria University (VU) in Melbourne. It’s impossible to hear Albert over the roar of formula one engines, but when asked if he’s any regrets about coming to Melbourne his broad grin and shake of the head say enough. "The only regret that I have is that I should have come to Melbourne sooner!” he laughs, as the noise subsides. “I would have learnt even more, gained networks quicker, have one year’s added experience and most importantly have had lots more fun while learning and working." It’s easy to see why Albert is so enthusiastic about his move overseas. In the five years since he arrived to complete his Bachelors degree at Victoria University (VU), he’s also accrued a Masters degree and gained experience managing and working at a range of events in the areas of sport, fashion and music, as well as building up his own entertainment and events company Alive Global Entertainment. "Coming to Melbourne gave me a change in perspective and I’ve learnt many work ethics and work operations that are so different from my country," he says. "This sparked a massive change in my way of thinking, as I was also advised by my Dad that the reason we go overseas is to learn how other people operate in terms of interaction, work environment and culture." This new perspective has brought many new opportunities. Though working in an events management role at this year’s Melbourne Grand Prix, Albert has also been involved in public relations, promotions and marketing activities since arriving in Melbourne. But he cites the experience and contacts gained from his two degrees at Victoria University – Bachelor of Business (Marketing/Music Industry) and Masters of Business (Event Management) – as having made all this possible. "The skills and knowledge learned in the areas of Events Management, Marketing and Music Industry management has obviously been vital, but the course also kept me up to date with the latest issues, both through the lecturers’ own industry know-how and through our own internships,” he says. “The contacts I made have landed me in many events on a permanent basis over the years and my internship with KissFM also opened many doors." "Courses at VU are ideal as they provide the necessary theory, as well as practical experience, plus good lecturers who have experience in their industry and industry contacts who share their knowledge." As well as the excellent learning environment, Albert also feels indebted to the “friendly and encouraging classmates” at VU, and the warmth and hospitality of Melburnians generally, for making his time in Melbourne so productive. In fact he’s enjoyed his time so much that he recently became an Australian permanent resident. However, Albert believes that as well as work and study there’s even more to be gained from coming to Melbourne. "In addition to academic achievement, I also had the chance to study in an international study environment where people from different parts of the world share their views, opinions and friendship," he says. "Partying while studying, travelling, working as a team and making friends for life was the best experience for me while at VU." Albert Lim has come a long way from Malaysia’s Sunway University College to Melbourne’s Grand Prix. But as the scream of engines returns to bring the conversation to a close, it seems that his move to Melbourne has put Albert in pole position and his career into top gear.
