Music Industry Students Potential Unlimited
Swapping the usual three piece suits for skinny jeans and flannelette shirts, the Faculty of Business and Law (FOBL) rocked out on Tuesday 7 October at City Flinders Campus for the official launch of the Potential Unlimited CD – a 13 track compilation featuring some of Australia’s hottest new bands and put together by students of the Bachelor of Business (Music Industry). A large and enthusiastic crowd, including the Managing Director of Mushroom Publishing, Ian James, the Federal Member for Maribyrnong, the Honourable Bill Shorten, MP, and FOBL Executive Dean Colin Clark, warmed to live performances from three acts featured on the CD: The Good China, The Violet Flames, and She Said Yes, featuring Tania Doko from Bachelor Girl. In his speech to officially launch the CD, Ian James, who was instrumental in establishing the music component at VU, said that as the only music industry course in Victoria this program offers gifted and talented students a career path into the music industry that does not otherwise exist. “The only way to understand the rather strange patterns in the music business is to be part of it,” he said. VU is Australia's only university that offers a Bachelor of Business focusing on the music industry and this CD project offers real-world experiences to Victoria University's (VU) music industry students, who gain vital insights into different aspects of the music industry including producing, promotion and marketing. Speaking at the launch, Professor Clark emphasised the importance placed by Victoria University on workplace learning and how it is enshrined as one of the university’s five stated commitments to its students; that VU will make at least 25% learning in the workplace and community a universal feature of VU courses. “This is about giving our students some real world experiences as they work their way through their degrees,” he said. “This is about ensuring that graduates from VU are profession ready.” VU music industry lecturer Adrian Marchesani said that the project not only provides valuable experience for VU students entering the music business, but also offers a platform for budding groups to build their profile. Teams of VU students worked directly with the bands, selecting the 13 tracks for the CD, and developing comprehensive strategies for its marketing, publicity and distribution. Hundreds of the CDs will be given away to students at other university campuses around Melbourne to get feedback about the collection, and promote up-and-coming Australian music.
