Accounting Peer Mentors receive official School thanks
The assistance and guidance provided by Peer Mentors to fellow students from the subject ‘Accounting for Decision Making’ was recognised by Acting Head of School Nick Sciulli, who presented them with Certificates of Participation at a morning tea held on Tuesday 21 October. Staff from the Faculty of Business and Law and Learning Support Services also attended to thank the students for their work. Acting in a voluntary capacity, Peer Mentors work in pairs throughout the semester to assist groups of students to review, practice and ask questions about the work covered during the previous week. This semester two new initiatives to support students were also introduced: online mentoring and evening mentoring sessions. During 2008 an exciting new development was trialled in Mentoring, as the co-ordinator for Peer Mentoring at Victoria University (VU), Dr. Gill Best, appointed two students to the new paid positions of Senior Mentors for semester 2. Selected on a competitive basis from a large pool of past mentors, both Senior Mentors are students from FOBL who had previously mentored for 3 semesters each. Since taking up their new roles, Katrina Hollingsworth and Kim Sng have worked on developing a number of initiatives for Peer Mentoring at VU and their efforts will also be acknowledged at another function in October. A Peer Mentoring Program has been offered in ‘Accounting for Decision Making’ for the past six years and runs each semester. Many student Mentors return for a second, and sometimes, even a third or fourth semester to help in the program. Their voluntary contribution to this work is highly appreciated by students and staff involved in the program and from staff in Learning Support Services, who co-ordinate Peer Mentoring at VU.
