Jane Shou Memorial Scholarship
The School of Information Systems invites high achieving students of Chinese extraction, currently enrolled in a Masters or a higher degree, to apply for the Jane Shou Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship is offered to commemorate the life of Jane Shou and the outstanding contribution she made to the University in teaching, supervision and the development of the department's postgraduate and research student profile.

VU's School of Information System's Participation in the 44th United Nations Graduate Study Progam
In July 2006, the Information Service of the United Nations Office at Geneva conducted a program at the Palais des Nations for a select group of graduate students. The program focused on issues relating to human rights, environment and development. The theme for the 44th Graduate Study Program was: “The United Nations: A time for renewal”.
Stergios (Stan) Karanasios (12 KB), a full time PhD student from the School of Information Systems was selected with two other Australian students to participate in this program. In total, about 100 students worldwide are selected to participate.
Stan’s PhD topic examines the impact of the Internet in developing countries with a particular focus on small business and tourism. His supervisors are Dr Stephen Burgess and Prof Michael McGrath.

Centre for Strategic Economics Studies Book Release
Engaging the New World: Responses to the Knowledge Economy
Victoria University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Elizabeth Harman recently welcomed the Hon. Simon Crean MP to VU.
The purpose of the visit as was to launch the Centre for Strategic and Economic Studies (CSES) book titled 'Engaging the New World: Responses to the Knowledge Economy’. The launch was conducted at a function held on Wednesday 12 July at the VU Conference Centre (City Flinders Campus.). The launch was attended by a large number of staff and students of the CSES including friends and colleagues of Professor Peter Sheehan, the founder and current director of the Centre,

Faculty Honours Business and Law ‘Legends’
As part of the Victoria University’s 90th birthday celebrations the Faculty of Business and Law honoured 90 'legends' whose contributions have played a significant part in creating the acclaimed faculty that exists today.
Professor Colin Clark, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law and Vice- President of CPA Australia said, “As the University celebrates this milestone the Faculty recognises this as an opportunity to formally honour the people and organisations that have contributed significantly to the Faculty and its continuing success”.

New Migration Law Course
We are now accepting enrolments for the new Graduate Certificate in Australian Migration
Law & Practice,
which kicks off in July. This is an exciting development in training
to become a migration agent. It can be completed in as little as six
months full time, and can be undertaken face-to-face, online or in
block mode. The course is run by VU's Sir Zelman Cowen Centre,
which handles all our postgraduate law courses.

Talking China
Members of the public and University are invited to the annual
conference of the Association for Chinese Economic Studies (Australia).
The conference, which considers key issues about China’s economy and place in the
world, has the theme Emerging China: Internal Challenges and Global
Implications. The conference, jointly organised by VU's Centre for
Strategic Economic Studies, will be held on 13-14 July. More

Students Winners at Work
Work Integrated Learning students recently capped off their 2005
workplace-based activities with awards recognising their performance in a range of fields from tourism to international trade. Kimberley Negrin (Bachelor of Business, Information Systems) took out the
award for the best overall WIL student based on her excellent
performance, great employer appraisals and outstanding contribution
to the University. Kimberley undertook a 12-month placement with Ford,
where contributed to several projects, and helped organise major events as
part of her role on the company's Graduate Advisory Committee.
"Being an IT Co-op student with Ford is an exciting and challenging
experience. You are given a 'real' position with 'real'
responsibilities," says Kim. "Tasks can range from IT support and administering IT
systems to project managing special assignments and implementing new
and/or improved IT processes and systems. Co-op allows you to apply your
knowledge from University in practice as well as further develop through
training and ongoing support. "

Event Research Conference
Papers are being called for the 4th International Event
Research Conference and associated symposium, to be held at Victoria
University next year. The conference theme is Re-Eventing the City: Events as Catalysts for
Change. VU's
Centre for Hospitality
and Tourism Research is co-hosting the conference with the Australian
Centre for Event Management at Sydney's University of Technology.
The conference will be held from 11-12 July, 2007, followed by the Second Event Education and Research Network Australasia Symposium on
13 July.
