Ann Mitsis Ann is a lecturer at the School of Management, but the path that brought her to VU wasn't neat and tidy. “I started out wanting to study physics, but I found out quite early it wasn’t what I wanted as a career,” Ann says. She now has a B.Bus in Retail Management, a M.Bus on Training & Change Management, and is studying for her PhD. Ann’s interest in management was sparked by her work at a New Apprenticeship Centre while studying for her retail management degree. “ I was particularly interested in training, development and change management, which sparked my interest in graduate studies in HR management." Ann is now looking forward to finishing her PhD and moving on to full-time academia. She enjoys the interaction with colleagues and students alike, sharing her knowledge and experiences with them. “I learn from their experiences, too,” she says. She says Victoria University is a key to her satisfying career. "Its flexible specialisations, the learning and support functions, the staff – all of these things helped me so much to find the right path, ” she says.

Tracy Spiteri After eight years as a full-time mum, not surprisingly Tracy Spiteri was nervous about returning to the workforce. Wanting a career rather than a job, she decided to study for her B.Bus in HR Management. "There was no question of which uni – it was always going to be VU," she says. Tracy was particularly happy with the interaction between students, lecturers and teaching staff. "It’s a very relaxed university, and the encouragement to share life experiences and opinions helped break down the age barriers," she says. Tracy’s hard work and perseverance paid off when she won the AHRI Prize for Excellence as the best graduating student for 2004, at a ceremony in June 2005. "Re-educating myself was a huge step and something I value enormously. The support I received from VU during my three years of study means I now have opportunities I would never have had before." Tracy is in a HR role in the Human Resource Department at Kangan Batman TAFE in Somerton, Victoria.
